US Senator: Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza

In an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) called the Israelis “war criminals” for deliberately withholding food from Gaza while children starve. But Van Hollen voted "yes" early Tuesday on the $95 billion foreign military aid bill, which includes $14 billion to support Israel's massacre of Palestinians.

“Children in Gaza are now dying from deliberate food deprivation. In addition to the horror of that news, there is something else that is true. This is a war crime. It is a textbook war crime. This makes those who organize it war criminals,” Van Hollen said.

President Biden "must demand that the Netanyahu government immediately allow more food, water and other life-saving supplies into Gaza and ensure they reach children and other people suffering from hunger," the senator said.

If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not agree to the demands, Van Hollen said President Biden should invoke Section 620-I of the Foreign Assistance Act. Section 620-i is designed to cut off arms exports to any country that restricts the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid.

Van Hollen also tried to justify his reasons for voting to send $14 billion in military aid to people he had just described as war criminals. According to The Intercept, Van Hollen cited $60 billion in spending on the proxy war in Ukraine and $9.2 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, Gaza, and other war zones around the world as reason enough to pass a bill that would give more support to Ukraine, Gaza, and other war zones around the world: More weapons for the government that has killed 12,300 Palestinian children since October 7.

The bill was approved by a vote of 70 to 29, with 20 Republicans voting in favor and only two Democrats opposed. The fate of the resolution in the House of Representatives is considered unclear, as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) indicates that he wants a border deal before it is put to a vote.
