To prevent escalation... Biden's envoy returns to Lebanon today
A US official said that White House Senior Advisor Amos Hochstein is expected to visit Beirut on Thursday, as part of US efforts to ease tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
Hochstein's visit to Lebanon comes after he visited Israel last week, and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed during the meeting that "Israel prefers the diplomatic path to calm tensions on the border with Lebanon," explaining that "the peaceful solution to this problem is constantly diminishing."
Last year, the US energy envoy raised the possibility of holding talks on demarcating the land border between Israel and Lebanon, after he brokered the 2022 agreement that defines the maritime borders between the two sides.
Washington fears that the war waged by Israel in Gaza will spread violence throughout the region, as it launches solidarity attacks from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
Hezbollah has exchanged fire with the Israeli army across the southern border of Lebanon since the Hamas movement attacked southern Israel from Gaza three months ago, prompting Israel to launch a violent attack on the Strip.
