Israel refuses to renew the visa of UN representative in Palestine
A United Nations spokesman said that Israel has notified the United Nations that it will not renew the visa of its humanitarian coordinator in the Palestinian territories, Len Hastinger, due to the diplomatic position on the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.
“The Israeli authorities have informed us that they will not renew Hastings’ visa beyond its due date later this month,” Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.
Dujarric declined to specify whether Hastings, who is based in Jerusalem, would be replaced or whether she would continue her work from another operating base.
He stressed that Guterres retains "full confidence" in Hastings.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, appointed Canadian diplomat, Lynn Hastings, as his deputy special envoy for the Middle East peace process and resident coordinator for the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The spokesman said: “You have seen some public attacks against her on the X platform (formerly Twitter), which are completely unacceptable.”
In late October, the Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized Hastings on X, saying: “According to the ethics of the United Nations, she is supposed to be neutral and objective, but unfortunately she is not.”
Israel has also criticized other officials, including Guterres, since the start of its war on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 15,000 Palestinians, including more than 8,000 children.
