Israeli reports optimism about the possibility of completing a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas
Reports reported by the Israeli media this evening, Wednesday, indicated “optimism” in Tel Aviv about the possibility of moving forward with the ongoing talks to reach a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, which includes a ceasefire in Gaza.
Reports indicated that the Israeli side set additional conditions for implementing a deal that includes the release of 50 hostages held by Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza, in exchange for the release of 150 women and children prisoners in the occupation prisons.
The channel also spoke about prisoners over the age of 16, but who “did not commit murders,” referring to prisoners with relatively short sentences.
According to Israeli Channel 12, the deal includes a ceasefire that may last up to five days, the entry of fuel under the supervision of the United Nations, in addition to an increase in the volume of humanitarian aid that the occupation allows to enter the Strip.
The channel reported that Israel demands the release of all Israeli children and mothers detained in the Gaza Strip, and the start of a ceasefire in conjunction with the Hamas movement's release of the first batch of prisoners or hostages.
The channel also indicated that the Israeli side demands the gradual release of the hostages in fixed and equal payments over several days. The Israeli side also insists on holding Hamas responsible for locating and bringing all the hostages.
For its part, Channel 14 reported that Israeli estimates indicate that the deal to release Israeli hostages will take place “within a few days” and will include 70 children, mothers and elderly women.
It reported that the deal would include the release of female and child prisoners in the occupation prisons “whose hands were not stained with blood,” according to the channel’s expression. In return, the occupation would agree to bring in fuel and humanitarian aid, and a ceasefire for several days.
On the other hand, informed sources indicated that Israeli intransigence may fail the talks, in light of the disagreement over the number of days of the ceasefire, and its rejection of some arrangements that include stopping the flights of drones during the preparations for the deal and the collection of hostages.
Israeli Channel 13 reported that the deal stipulates that Hamas will release a certain number of prisoners and hostages over the days of the ceasefire, and stated that Israel refuses to begin the ceasefire before releasing the first batch of hostages.
The channel reported that Israel insists on starting a ceasefire, with the release of the first hostages held by resistance factions in Gaza.
She pointed to the Israeli dilemma of agreeing to complete the deal or tightening the position in the talks so that this plays a role in Israel’s favor in possible subsequent negotiations or deals.
In turn, the Walla website stated that the issue of the duration of the ceasefire is the main gap in the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas through the American and Qatari mediators, and said that Hamas insists on 5 days, while Israel agrees on 3.
He stated that Israel would not agree to a temporary ceasefire unless it included the release of a large number of hostages held by Hamas and other factions in Gaza. For this purpose, the website indicated “the need for Egyptian approval and assistance.”
The website stated that the main difficulties in the mediation efforts are the difficulty of communicating with the leaders of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, which delays the negotiations and makes them very slow. Reaching understandings with other factions holding Israeli prisoners and hostages.”
Walla quoted high-ranking Israeli and American officials as saying, “Due to the gaps that still exist between the two parties, it is not clear whether it is possible to reach an agreement to release the hostages in the coming days.”
The report also pointed out that the occupation's storming of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, which includes thousands of sick, wounded, displaced, and medical staff, and taking them hostage and human shields, aroused the dissatisfaction of Hamas leaders, which may complicate negotiations.
