Pope Francis: I appeal to you in the name of God to declare a ceasefire in Gaza

The Pope of the Vatican issued an urgent appeal to stop the war in the Gaza Strip, calling for the provision of humanitarian aid and assistance to the injured in order to alleviate the “very dangerous” situation.

Today, Sunday, Pope Francesco said to a crowd in St. Peter's Square after the Angelus prayer, "I continue to think about the dangerous situation in Palestine and Israel, where many people lost their lives... I appeal to you in the name of God to stop and declare a ceasefire."

He added, "I hope that all measures will be taken to avoid escalation of the conflict, that the wounded will be helped, and that aid will reach the residents of Gaza, where the humanitarian situation is very serious."

The Pope renewed his calls for a ceasefire and the release of detainees held by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) following the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, with a focus on children who he said “must return to their families.”

"Let's think about the children, all the children involved in this war, in Ukraine and other conflicts: in this way their future is being killed," he added.

Humanitarian corridors: Pope Francesco called for the opening of humanitarian corridors, and said that the two-state solution is necessary to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Pope has previously called several times for an end to the fighting, the release of detainees, and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Israeli army is waging a devastating war on Gaza for the 30th day, after the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation. About 9,770 Palestinians were killed, including 4,800 children and 2,550 women, and more than 24,000 others were injured. In the West Bank, 151 Palestinians were killed and 2,080 were arrested, according to official Palestinian sources.
