On Saturday, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati renewed his calls to the international community for the “necessity of pressuring Israel” for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.

During a meeting with US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Mikati said, “The priority of action must be a ceasefire in Gaza and southern Lebanon.”

He added: “Lebanon, which is committed to international legitimacy and the implementation of International Resolution 1701, and in coordination with UNIFIL, calls on the international community to put pressure on Israel to stop the daily encroachments and violations on its land and sovereignty on land, sea and air.”

The land border between Lebanon and Israel is witnessing mutual attacks, by Israeli forces on the one hand, and Hezbollah on the other, after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.

Even in the months before the war, the border witnessed tensions between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, which fought their last major war in July 2006.

Blinken is visiting Jordan from Israel, where he will also meet in Amman with the Jordanian King, King Abdullah II, and a number of Arab foreign ministers.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement, on Friday evening, that this meeting was held with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and Qatar, in addition to Jordan and the United States.

Blinken said in Israel, on Friday, after a quick one-day visit, that he "discussed with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, the possibility of a humanitarian truce, which would allow in particular to protect civilians trapped in the war, and accelerate the delivery of aid."

But Netanyahu announced his rejection of a "temporary truce without the release of the hostages" who were kidnapped by Hamas during its attack on Israel on October 7.
