US Representatives Omar and Tlaib received death threats for criticizing Israel
Muslim Representative, Somali, Ilhan Omar (Democrat from Minnesota) revealed to NBC News that she feels that her life may be in danger after she has been inundated with threats since the start of the war launched by Israel on Gaza, following a surprise attack launched by the Palestinian Hamas movement on Israel on October 7, reflecting broader fears among Muslim Americans who feel they have been targeted to a degree unseen since the days following September 11, 2001.
Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, whose family fled civil war in Somalia before immigrating to the United States, had condemned the Hamas attack, but her long-term criticism of Israel's policy toward the Palestinians and her criticism of unconditional American support for Israel made her vulnerable to ongoing attacks by Israeli lobby organizations. , especially the "GIPAC" organization, which sought to defeat Representative Omar by spending millions of dollars, without success.
US Capitol Police and the House Sergeant-at-Arms briefed Rep. Omar and other progressive lawmakers critical of Israel - including the only Palestinian member of the House, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., of potential threats last week. According to a Democratic aide familiar with the meeting.
The voicemail messages heard by NBC News included profanity-laced death threats, calling Omar a "Muslim terrorist." Another claimed a vigilante group was spying on the congresswoman and “your kids” and “obtained all your addresses and handed them over to the rapists.”
The third voicemail caller claimed: “I am from an armed group.” “I can't wait for our group to see you one day and I can rip the rag off your head... I hope the Israelis kill every single one of you.”
Ilhan Omar said in a statement that she and other American Muslims have been victims of “unfair slander” that equates criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians with support for Hamas, which has created an environment in which threats proliferate.
“I directly put my life and the lives of my family at risk, and subjected my employees to painful verbal abuse simply for doing their job,” Omar said. “More importantly, it threatens millions of American Muslims.”
“This toxic language and images have real-world consequences,” Omar continued. “House Republican leaders remain silent while their party unleashes these toxic attacks and refuse to hold extremists in their ranks accountable.” Since I took office, two men have pleaded guilty to threatening to kill me. This is very real. "I fear for my children and I have to talk to them about staying vigilant because you never know."
Omar, Tlaib and other members of the “squad” of progressive lawmakers have long been targets of conservative media, and were often targeted by former President Donald Trump.
Representative Lauren Boebert, Republican of Colorado, called them the “Jihad Squad,” while Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, called them the “Hamas Rally,” and the official Republican campaign arm in the House of Representatives called them the “Bloc.” agitation".
These members also faced official criticism from their party and Jewish leaders. The White House described the initial response of other Squad members to the Hamas attack as "abhorrent," while Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, said on Wednesday that it was "really troubling" that members of Congress believe what Hamas says and do not. They believe what Israel says, after Representative Tlaib repeated her accusations that Israel bombed Al-Ahly Baptist Hospital in Gaza.
Tlaib now faces a demand for "condemnation and censure" from Republicans over her comments.
It is noteworthy that the security briefing provided by the Congressional Police last Thursday afternoon, which was organized in part by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also included Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, (D-New York), Jamaal Bowman, (D-New York), and Cori Bush, (Democrat from Missouri), Barbara Lee (Democrat from California), Sheila Jackson Lee (Democrat from Texas), Ayanna Pressley (Democrat from Massachusetts), and Delia Ramirez (Democrat from Illinois).
Because of the ongoing threats, many of these members have long been assigned security detail, which is highly unusual for members of Congress outside of senior leadership roles. But Omar's office said the threats in the past 10 days were worse than ever.
In a voice message left on her office phone, one caller said: “I hope someone kills you and puts you in hell,” while another caller said she “should drop dead for supporting terrorists.”
The caller who claimed that Omar was being spied on said that the group that targeted her had hacked all of her accounts and was allegedly preparing to poison her and her family.
“The claims are that they will kill you, and we are seeing that online,” the caller said. “I pray that they get justice for all the traitors.”
The Capitol Police said it does not comment on specific threats, but confirmed that it is working to "enhance security throughout the Capitol complex" and said it is "working around the clock to coordinate with our law enforcement and intelligence partners across the country to keep everyone safe."
Last summer, a Florida man was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $7,000 over an email threat to Omar, Tlaib, and Ocasio-Cortez.
