Arab League Chief talks with Brazilian President's advisor on Gaza situation

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, discussed with the Brazilian President’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, Celso Amorim, the seriousness of the recent Israeli measures aimed at transferring residents from the north of the Gaza Strip to its south, and forcibly displacing them in a manner that constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General, Jamal Rushdi, said that the phone call dealt with learning about the Arab League’s vision of the dangerous developments taking place in the Gaza Strip, and he was keen to put the Brazilian official in the picture of the current developments, especially in light of his country’s assumption of the presidency of the Security Council, which places a great responsibility on it. In taking action to stop the frantic Israeli attacks against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Aboul Gheit reviewed the danger of pushing the Gaza Strip into a humanitarian catastrophe of unprecedented scope, especially since Israeli military operations reflect a state of frenzied revenge without any regard to international humanitarian law, which prohibits the forced displacement of civilians under occupation, as stipulated in the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The Secretary-General stressed the responsibility of the international community, especially the member states of the Security Council, which Brazil currently chairs, to curb Israeli madness and set a red line for these practices. It was agreed on the necessity of an immediate ceasefire, and to pave the way for the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip to provide relief to the population.
