South Korea pledges to increase financial support for UNRWA

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin pledged on Friday to continue financial aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), with the aim of better supporting Palestinian refugees.

Jin's statements came before his meeting with the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in the capital, Seoul, where South Korea is scheduled to be a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for two years, according to what was reported by Yonhap News Agency.

“South Korea will hold its seat on the United Nations Security Council starting next year for a period of two years,” Park Jin said.

He added, "As a member of the United Nations Security Council, we are committed to playing a constructive role on the Palestinian issue."

“We will also continue to increase our financial contributions to the agency so that we can better support the livelihoods of Palestine refugees,” he added.

In turn, Lazzarini congratulated South Korea for winning a seat in the UN Security Council, and stressed the importance of UNRWA's partnership with Seoul to resolve the Palestinian issue.

He also called for attention and support for Palestinian refugees "who have been waiting for a very long time for a just and lasting political solution."
