Fire in an oil depot in Sevastopol after a drone attack in Crimea
A major fire broke out Saturday at an oil depot in Sevastopol, the main port of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea, which is currently under Russian control, after a drone attack, local authorities said.
Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razugayev wrote on Telegram, "A fire broke out in an oil depot in Kazachiya Bay (...). According to preliminary information, it was caused by a drone attack," stressing that "there were no casualties."
He added that 60 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to fight the fire that broke out in an area of about 1,000 square metres, and it is not expected to be controlled before evening falls.
"The situation is under control," Razugayev confirmed on Telegram, explaining that "civilian infrastructure is not threatened."
The state-run RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as telling reporters that a total of four oil tanks were damaged in the attack and "burned".
Since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, has been a frequent target of attacks by air and sea drones.
In mid-April, the authorities on the peninsula announced the cancellation of the celebrations of the first and ninth of May (the official date of the end of World War II in Russia), citing "security problems".
