Russia announces thwarting an attempt to infiltrate Ukraine into its territory
Russia confirmed on Monday that it had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to infiltrate its territory through the Bryansk border region, ten days after announcing a similar incident.
"The infiltrator exploded at a mined defensive line established by the Russian armed forces to prevent infiltration into Russian territory and ensure the safety of residents of the border areas," said the region's governor, Alexander Bogomaz , via Telegram.
He denounced Ukraine 's "illegal attempt" to "penetrate" Russia's borders.
In recent weeks, the Russian authorities have announced several attempts by "terrorists" to infiltrate from Ukraine to the border areas, which are also regularly subjected to artillery shelling and drone attacks.
On April 6, Bogomaz confirmed that border guards had "thwarted" an attempt to infiltrate "20 men" from Ukraine by "shooting at the enemy."
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the security forces to "do everything possible to ensure the safety of the population" both in Russia and in the Ukrainian territories it controls, where several pro-Moscow officials have been assassinated in the past months.
Ukraine does not officially acknowledge carrying out "sabotage" operations on Russian soil, and it has especially denied any connection to the attack that destroyed part of the Crimean bridge last fall.
But in early March, hundreds of Ukrainians attended a funeral in Kiev for fighters from a volunteer battalion killed during a "sabotage" mission in Russia.
