Washington announces a new $2.6 billion tranche of military aid to Ukraine

On Tuesday, the United States announced a new $2.6 billion tranche of military aid to Ukraine , including Patriot surface-to-air defense missiles and artillery ammunition.

Of the total value of this aid, the United States will provide $500 million in weapons from its own stockpile, while the remaining $2.1 billion will be orders from the defense industries sector, according to a Pentagon statement.

In addition to the missile defense systems, the Ukrainian forces will receive additional ammunition for the American-made "HIMARS" missile launchers, rocket artillery, and miscellaneous ammunition and spare parts, according to the US Department of Defense.

The orders from the defense industries sector will include, in particular, air defense and artillery equipment.

With this tranche, the total value of military aid that the United States has provided to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion of its lands on February 24, 2022 rises to $35.1 billion.

The new tranche was announced on a historic day that witnessed Finland's accession to NATO, in a shift to the non-alignment policy that Helsinki had adopted for decades.
