Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - A number of students of the first batch in the Master's degree in Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at the Faculty of Public Health at Al-Quds University discussed their letters marking their graduation from the first program in its field in Palestine.
The College of Public Health, represented by its dean, Dr. Hazem Agha and her academic staff in the program graduated the first batch of distinguished students, extending congratulations and congratulations to the graduates, the university family, faculty members in the college, and experts and specialists who participated in supporting the program and its students.
In her dissertation, the pharmacist, Duaa Jamil Diab Al-Basha, studied the subject of “Renal function impairment in patients who were admitted to hospitals due to the acquisition of Covid-19 infection: a study of two centers in Palestine.” -Acute Kidney Injury in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19: Data from Two Centers in Palestine .
The results of the study showed the proven need to follow up survivors of COVID-19 infection with signs of associated renal impairment (AKI) to understand the long-term impact on kidney function and kidney health, so that patients with acute renal impairment (AKI) need close monitoring and careful handling.
It concluded that renal failure is common among COVID-19 patients who require hospitalization, and that some have an ongoing need for renal replacement therapy (RRT). There was an association between the severity of renal failure, more in-hospital complications, and the risk of death.
For her part, the student Al-Basha indicated that the staff of the program consisted of the most skilled academics and doctors, who were role models and a living example for the students, and did not hesitate to encourage any research idea and frame it in a manner commensurate with the needs of the academic and medical community.
And she continued, "The name of Al-Quds University has a distinctive privacy, in addition to the fact that our program is the first of its kind that opens horizons before our eyes. We were fortunate in paving the way for us and we worked hard in turn to reach it."
The student Muhammad Al-Zeer’s thesis was titled: “Association between Diabetes and the Outcome of COVID-19 in Bethlehem- Palestine: A Case-Control Study”, supervised by Dr. Rasmi Abu Helou. The discussion committee consisted of the external examiner, Dr. Muhammad Al-Qadi and the internal examiner d. Ibrahim Abbasi.
The results of his research showed a correlation between age, blood pressure, shortness of breath, and the need for oxygen supply. The death rate due to COVID-19 was (14.2%), 39 of whom were diabetics, 24 patients suffered from cardiovascular diseases (5.7%), 140 patients suffered from high blood pressure (33.6%) and 27 patients suffered from kidney diseases ( 6.5%).
And it was found that diabetics were at risk of contracting the Covid-19 virus almost twice more than non-diabetics, and the results showed that kidney function and days of hospitalization increased with the severity of the infection with Covid-19, while there was no relationship between sex, heart patients, and liver tests with the severity of the infection. with covid-19.
It is noteworthy that Al-Quds University launched the master's program "Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases" in the academic year 2021/2022, and it is a new major taught by local and international academics with competence and experience in the field of infectious diseases, microbiology and immunology, epidemiology, pharmacology, medicine and institution management. and emergencies, and aims to converge and integrate epidemiology, laboratory sciences, rationing and controlling the use of antimicrobials, and public health sciences together, in the context of combating infectious diseases.
