Poland will not get money from the "European" soon, despite the approval of the European Commission
WARSAW - (Xinhua) -- Polish President Andrzej Duda has welcomed the European Commission's approval of Poland's national recovery plan, but his country will have to wait for funding.
Speaking at a press conference with visiting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki near Warsaw, Duda said the approval "has great importance for Poland to receive EU funding in the future," according to the Polish News Agency.
A row over the rule of law delayed the European Commission's approval of the national recovery plan, prompting the Polish government to comply with a European court's demand to liquidate a judicial disciplinary body.
Duda expressed his satisfaction that his amendments to the Supreme Court Act "led to agreement both in the Polish parliament and in the European Union."
The European Commission president on Wednesday formally confirmed the long-awaited approval by the EU executive of the national recovery plan, enabling the commission to conditionally release 23.9 billion euros (25.68 billion U.S. dollars) in grants and 11.5 billion euros in loans.
"The adoption of the plan is linked to Poland's clear commitment to the independence of the judiciary," von der Leyen said, noting that it is not the end of the road for the rule of law in Poland.
However, the Commission's approval must win the endorsement of the other 26 EU member states within four weeks before the funds are released.
"The first payment will only be possible when the new law comes into force and all other conditions are met," von der Leyen said.
