An avalanche leads to the burial of about ten people in Austria
Vienna - (AFP) - About a dozen winter sports practitioners were buried Sunday in an avalanche in the Vorarlberg region in western Austria , police said.
"One person has been rescued and the operation is continuing to find the others," a police spokesman told AFP, without giving further details.
Helicopters and teams with trail dogs are involved in the search.
The avalanche occurred in the afternoon at about 2,700 meters above sea level, in the Lech Zurz ski area. No information was provided on the identity of those affected.
Rescue workers warned this weekend of an avalanche risk in this area as well as in neighboring Tyrol, noting the fragility of the snowpack in fair weather.
In recent years, avalanches have caused about twenty deaths per year, on average, in Austria.
