An agreement between the Democratic Party, the left and the Greens in preparation for the elections in Italy

Rome, (AFP) - The center-left Italian Democratic Party announced Saturday that it had reached an agreement with the left and the Greens over legislative elections to be held in September, and the right-wing bloc allied with the nationalist right appears to be the most likely to win.

This agreement with the "Green Europe" and "Italian Left" parties was "necessary", according to the Secretary General of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta.

Letta was speaking at a joint press conference with the leader of the "Italian Left" Nicola Fratoianni and co-speaker of the "Green Europe" party Angelo Bonelli.

Mr. Fratoianni emphasized that "differences should not be an obstacle to rapprochement," stressing that "a new phase begins" in order to "prevent the extreme right" from coming to power.

The Democratic Party was able to obtain the support of the small centrist group "Labor" led by Carlo Calenda, with the aim of confronting the conservative bloc consisting of the "Forward Italy " parties led by Silvio Berlusconi, the "League" led by Matteo Salvini and the "Brothers of Italy" led by Giorgia Meloni. .

The left has been under pressure since the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi's National Unity coalition last month. Draghi launched the election campaign, which was quickly dominated by the right.

The legislative elections will be held on the twenty-fifth of September, while Italy, which is heavily indebted, is witnessing high inflation and concerns about energy supplies due to the war in Ukraine.
