Thousands take part in a rally in Washington in support of the protests in Iran
Washington - (AFP) - Thousands of people, including many Iranian men and women, marched in the US capital, Washington, on Saturday, in support of the protests in Iran, and marched to the White House, carrying the slogan "Women Live Freedom."
The march started at the end of the afternoon from the National Mall, which is a large square in the city center. Carrying the colors of the Iranian flag in the sun, they headed towards the White House, and the participants chanted, "We want freedom" and "justice for Iran."
"This is our fifth weekly protest in Washington, and I think it is the largest," Siamak Aram, one of the organizers, told AFP, adding that the number of participants is likely to be "more than ten thousand" people.
Some of the protesters came from other American cities such as Boston.
"Help liberate Iran," said Mahshid, 28, who was wearing a green T-shirt. "We no longer want this tyrannical regime that prevents us from benefiting from our human rights and our freedom," added the young engineer, who left Iran three years ago and did not want to reveal her full name because her family is still in the country.
On a banner held by another young woman, a lock of hair hung alongside the words, "Our hair may bother you, but our mind will finish you."
More than a month ago, widespread protests erupted in Iran, sparked by the death of the young Iranian-Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police, who accused her of violating the strict dress code in the Islamic Republic.
On Saturday, demonstrations took place in support of Berlin and Tokyo as well. In Washington, Marjan, 55, said it was important to "show that we support the people of Iran." She was pleased that the procession included people of "different ages and religions" who lived in Iran and abroad.
"This is a wonderful revolution led by women who are the most oppressed in Iran," Negar, 53, told AFP. "The least we can do is be here."
