Iran vows revenge after the European Union and Britain imposed sanctions on it
TEHRAN, (Xinhua) -- Iran on Tuesday expressed strong condemnation of the new sanctions imposed by the European Union and Britain, vowing to take retaliatory measures.
In a statement posted on the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website, ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Iran reserves the right to take retaliatory measures against such "failed policies" and will soon announce the new sanctions list against "violators of human rights and supporters of terrorism" in the European Union and Britain.
On Monday, the European Union imposed sanctions on more than 30 Iranian officials and organizations, including units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in connection with the response of these units to protests that erupted in the country recently. Britain and the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran on the same day.
The spokesman said that the step taken by the European Union and Britain indicates that they have failed to properly understand the Iranian reality, adding that the sanctions imposed by the European Union and Britain on members of the Iranian Parliament as well as judicial, military, police and cultural officials are signs of their "oppression, frustration and anger" because of their "utter failure". Recently in sowing unrest in the country despite their efforts and exorbitant costs.
He pointed out that "the sanctions will not affect the determination of the Iranian nation and its desire to confront foreign interference and conspiracies."
Protests erupted in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in a Tehran hospital on September 16, 2022, a few days after she collapsed in a police station.
Iran accuses the United States and some other Western countries of "inciting riots and supporting terrorists" in the country.
