Dozens of activists and supporters of the Palestinian cause, led by Swedish medical personnel, gathered in a protest in front of Karolinska Hospital in the capital, Stockholm. This event came to express full support for the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, who has been facing harsh conditions in Israeli occupation prisons since his arrest late last year.
The participants in the demonstration chanted slogans demanding the immediate freedom of the 53-year-old doctor, and raised Palestinian flags and pictures documenting his suffering behind bars. The demonstrators also stressed the necessity of boycotting the Israeli occupation in response to the systematic violations practiced against medical personnel and health facilities in the Gaza Strip, considering the targeting of doctors a blatant violation of international laws.
The details of Dr. Abu Safiya's arrest date back to December 27, 2024, when Israeli army forces stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Strip. He was taken to an unknown destination at a time when the hospital was trying to provide medical services to the wounded and sick under the heavy bombardment and siege imposed by the occupation on the area.
Human rights sources and testimonies from released prisoners conveyed shocking information about the situation Abu Safiya is experiencing inside detention centers, confirming that he was subjected to solitary confinement and severe physical and psychological torture. International fears for his life are increasing in light of the absence of necessary medical care and the continued policy of abuse practiced by prison administrations against Palestinian medical personnel.
In a related context, Elias Abu Safiya, the eldest son of the detained doctor, revealed painful details about his father's last appearance during a court hearing before the Israeli Supreme Court last June. He explained that his father appeared to be in a very deteriorated health condition, as he was handcuffed and shackled, reflecting the extent of the suffering he has endured since the moment of his arrest from inside his medical facility.
Freedom for Hussam Abu Safiya.. Freedom for Palestine.
