After the Knesset approved the preliminary reading of the law to annex the occupied West Bank, official American statements were issued confirming a rejection of this, with an implication that the United States would not allow it. However, a deeper reading suggests that this may not necessarily be accurate.

Since its occupation in 1967, the U.S. has rejected this, while the occupation seeks to impose its actual control over the occupied West Bank and increase settlement activity in what was known as "silent annexation."

Since 2017, Finance Minister and military settlement official Bezalel Smotrich has inherited this legacy, calling for it to be transformed into full political and legal annexation, within what he termed the "decisive moment."
