Internal disputes hinder EU's positions against the Israeli occupation.. despite the escalation of its crimes.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated on Tuesday that: "The disagreements among member states prevent Brussels from taking practical action against the Israeli occupation's practices towards the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, despite the scale of the worsening humanitarian disaster there."

Kallas's remarks came during a session of the European Parliament titled: "Gaza at the Breaking Point... The EU's Action to Combat Famine, Release Prisoners, and the Need to Move Forward Towards a Two-State Solution."

She clarified that: "The division among member states is what has hindered collective action," adding that: "Some European governments are currently pursuing individual initiatives, including recognizing the State of Palestine or imposing sanctions on the Israeli occupation."

Kallas revealed that: "The European Commission has prepared a list of possible options to pressure the Israeli government, including suspending Tel Aviv's participation in the Horizon Europe scientific program (2021-2027)."

She added that: "This step has not yet received sufficient support within the European Council."

Additionally, she pointed out that: "The Union is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment - at the request of the Netherlands - regarding the Israeli occupation's compliance with Article Two of the partnership agreement concluded with it, which stipulates the necessity of respecting human rights as a condition for cooperation."

She said: "I believe we must continue our diplomatic efforts with the Israeli government, because if we do not talk, we will not get anywhere."

It is noted that there are many differing statements from several foreign ministers of the Union: Spain: Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced that: "His country has presented an action plan that includes imposing an arms export ban to the Israeli occupation and expanding the list of sanctions against it, calling for a complete suspension of the agreement with it."

He said: "We cannot continue to stand idly by... the European Union has achieved nothing, and the time for words has ended; we must act."

Germany: Foreign Minister Johan Vadivol emphasized that: "Berlin demands that the Israeli occupation respect humanitarian principles in its fight against Hamas, and announced his country's rejection of plans to occupy Gaza."

Netherlands: Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp revealed that: His country, along with Sweden, sent a letter to the Union calling for pressure on the Israeli occupation and Hamas to reach an agreement in Gaza, confirming that the Netherlands will propose imposing a ban on the import of settlement products from the West Bank.

Iceland: Foreign Minister Simon Harris directed a strong letter to the Union, saying: "If we do not impose sanctions on Israel now, when will we?" stressing that: "International organizations have proven the occurrence of acts of genocide in Gaza and that condemnations are no longer sufficient."

Austria: Foreign Minister Beate Reisinger announced that: Her country is seeking to take concrete measures against extremist settlers, including imposing specific sanctions, noting that: "The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic and requires urgent intervention."

Denmark: Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that: His country is ready to impose sanctions on ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu's government and to prevent the export of settlement products, while Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused the Tel Aviv government of "shirking its responsibilities" and showing no signs of changing its course.

Slovenia: Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon clarified that her country has already taken measures against the Israeli occupation, including preventing the entry of Israeli ministers and banning trade dealings and arms exports, confirming that she will demand stricter European steps.

Norway: (not a member of the Union but a partner in European policies) Foreign Minister Espen Barth emphasized the need to provide "strong support for building a Palestinian state, ending the war, delivering aid, and pressuring the Israeli occupation."

These European positions come amid the ongoing reckless aggression of the Israeli occupation on Gaza since October 7, 2023, with direct American support, which has so far resulted in 64,605 martyrs and more than 163,319 injured, most of whom are women and children, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.

The famine caused by the war and siege has led to the martyrdom of 399 Palestinians, including 140 children, according to official Palestinian statistics.

Despite these catastrophic figures, the European Union remains unable to take a unified stance towards the Israeli occupation, amid internal disagreements reflecting a divergence between countries pushing for sanctions and recognition of the Palestinian state, and others clinging to a diplomatic discourse lacking any effective pressure tools.
