All bakeries in the Gaza Strip stopped operating on Tuesday due to a shortage of flour and fuel, which the Israeli occupation has prevented from entering the Strip for an entire month.
The head of the Bakeries Association in Gaza, Abdel Nasser Al-Ajrami, told WAFA yesterday that all bakeries in Gaza working with the World Food Programme (WFP) would close today due to a shortage of flour. He added that the war of starvation is raging again, as WFP-supported bakeries in the southern Gaza Strip closed their doors yesterday, while bakeries in Gaza and the northern Gaza Strip will cease operations as of today.
Al-Ajrami said, "The reason is the closure and blockade imposed on goods, which has led to a shortage of flour, fuel, and yeast as well." He noted that, "This closure casts a dire shadow over the living conditions of Gazans who are suffering the ravages of this brutal war, not to mention the lack of cooking gas."
The Gaza Strip consumes 450 tons of flour daily, according to the Gaza Bakeries Association. Bakeries used to cover 50% of citizens' needs.
There are 140 bakeries operating in the Gaza Strip, including 70 automated bakeries. A large proportion of these were destroyed by Israeli occupation forces, particularly those in the northern Gaza Strip. Losses are estimated to be in the millions of dollars.
Since October 7, 2023, the occupying forces have launched an aggression against the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 50,399 citizens, the majority of whom were children and women, and the injury of 114,583 others. This is a preliminary toll, with a number of victims still buried under the rubble and on the streets, unable to be reached by ambulances and rescue teams.
