UN: Hunger must not be allowed to spread again in Gaza

The spokesman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Thameen Al-Khaitan, said that the Israeli occupation authorities’ prevention of all humanitarian aid from entering the Gaza Strip is inconsistent with their responsibilities under international law, and that the international community must not allow hunger to spread again in Gaza.

He added that Israel, as an occupying power, is obligated to provide all necessary capabilities to ensure the arrival of food and medical supplies to the population in Gaza, in addition to securing the health system.

Al-Khaitan stressed that Israel must allow the entry of humanitarian aid and other basic needs, and facilitate their access to the Strip.

Regarding Israel's decision to completely halt the entry of all aid into Gaza, the UN spokesman described this step as unacceptable and a violation of Israel's obligations under international law.

He warned of the negative repercussions of the rise in prices of basic foodstuffs, and the spread of concerns about the possibility of accessing basic life-saving needs in Gaza in the future.

Al-Khaitan stressed the need not to allow hunger to spread again in Gaza, calling on the humanitarian community to ensure that vital aid reaches the Strip without hindrance.
