Netanyahu holds consultations tonight as negotiating team returns from Cairo

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold telephone consultations late Friday night - Saturday regarding developments in the Gaza ceasefire agreement and the prisoner exchange deal, as the negotiating team returns from the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and MK Aryeh Deri, in addition to the heads of the security services and the negotiating team, are participating in the consultations.

A senior Israeli official announced on Friday evening that the negotiating team would return from Cairo tonight, and that negotiations would continue in Cairo on Saturday.

Two Israeli officials familiar with the negotiations in Cairo said, "The talks were not good and there was no progress. The mediators asked us for time to resolve the crisis in the coming days," according to Israel's Channel 13.

According to an Israeli security official, Netanyahu will discuss military options during the consultations in the event that the ceasefire agreement ends at the beginning of the week.

Channel 12 quoted an Israeli official as saying, "The reason for the negotiating team's return from Cairo is Hamas's refusal to extend the first phase of the agreement according to the current proposal," which stipulates a prisoner exchange between the two sides.

He pointed out that "the mediators continue their attempts to reach an agreement until the end of the week."

In the same context, Reuters quoted two Egyptian security sources earlier on Friday as saying that "the Israeli delegation in Cairo is trying to reach an agreement to extend the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza for an additional 42 days."

For its part, Hamas stressed in an official statement issued on Friday its commitment to implementing all the terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the prisoner exchange with the end of the first phase of it on Saturday evening, and called on the mediators to pressure Israel to immediately enter the second phase of it.
