Israel intensifies its bombing of northern Gaza, and WHO calls for the release of Dr. Abu Safiya
The Israeli occupation army intensified its artillery shelling on various areas in the Gaza Strip on Monday, while the displaced are living in tragic conditions due to the repercussions of the low pressure system that hit the Strip. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization called for stopping the targeting of hospitals and releasing the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Hussam Abu Safiya.
In the northern Gaza Strip, Israeli occupation army vehicles intensively bombed various areas, most notably the Saftawi area, Jabalia al-Nazla, and Jabalia camp.
The occupation forces fired flares intensively in those areas, while the sounds of huge explosions were heard as a result of the demolition of residential buildings in the north.
Al Jazeera's correspondent reported that Israeli artillery shelling continued on large areas in the northern Gaza Strip, and that the shelling was more concentrated around Kamal Adwan Hospital, which was burned by the occupation forces two days ago.
In Gaza City, the correspondent said that the occupation artillery targeted the Zeitoun neighborhood in the south of Gaza City, and also fired a missile at displaced persons who left the center of Jabalia camp towards Gaza City.
The areas northwest of Gaza City, the Zeitoun neighborhood, and Al-Sabra in the south of the city also witnessed intermittent artillery shelling.
Eyewitnesses said that Israeli Quadcopter drones opened fire in the vicinity of Ibn al-Haytham Pharmacy on al-Jalaa Street, northwest of Gaza City.
In the central governorate, eyewitnesses reported that the northwest of the Nuseirat camp was targeted with artillery shells, coinciding with random gunfire from a helicopter and Israeli army vehicles, which resulted in the injury of a Palestinian.
In the south, the Israeli Navy bombed the Al-Mawasi area west of Rafah, while the northwest of the city witnessed intense artillery shelling, according to eyewitnesses.
"Hospitals are battlefields"
On the other hand, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that hospitals in Gaza have once again become battlefields, and the health system is under severe threat, and attacks on hospitals must stop.
Ghebreyesus called for the release of Kamal Adwan Hospital Director Dr. Hussam Abu Safia after the Israeli raid on the hospital, and the forced evacuation of patients and staff.
He added that the critically ill patients were transferred to the Indonesian hospital, which is also out of service, and the Israeli army arrested 4 of them during the transfer.
The Director of the World Health Organization confirmed that Al-Ahli Hospital and Al-Wafa Hospital in Gaza City were damaged after being targeted.
Ghebreyesus called for a ceasefire, and urged Israel to respect the needs and rights of patients.
WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris also renewed her urgent call to ensure the protection and assistance of hospitals in Gaza.
Harris said in an interview with Al Jazeera that all the organization's efforts to maintain the health system in Gaza were in vain.
She added that transferring patients from Kamal Adwan Hospital to the Indonesian Hospital is just a show, and it is just a building that lacks medical equipment and specialized staff.
The suffering of the displaced
In addition to the bombing and destruction, the Government Media Office in Gaza reported that the number of deaths due to the severe cold and frost waves had risen to 7 among the displaced whose homes were destroyed by the occupation, adding that the number is likely to increase due to the tragic circumstances.
For its part, the Gaza Municipality said that thousands of displaced Palestinians are living in tragic conditions due to the repercussions of the low pressure system that is hitting the Strip, accompanied by heavy rains and storms, in light of the lack of capabilities and alternative shelters.
Gaza Municipality spokesman Asem Al-Nabih said that the displaced people are suffering from very tragic conditions, as rainwater flooded their tents.
Al-Nabih added that the drainage of rainwater and sewage is almost complicated due to the massive damage to the sewage networks and the rain.
He revealed that the damage included all sewage stations and pumps, and affected 175,000 meters of sewage networks and 15,000 meters of rainwater networks in Gaza City.
Al-Nabi called on international organizations to intervene to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza and provide the minimum services under these difficult circumstances.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza, in full view of the entire world, leaving more than 153,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded - most of them children and women - and more than 11,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine that killed dozens of children and elderly people, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
