WHO warns: Gaza's health system under severe threat

"The health system in the Gaza Strip is under severe threat," World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday.

He called for an end to attacks on hospitals, saying: "People in Gaza need access to health care, and humanitarian workers need access to health assistance."

The organization's director-general added, "Al-Ahli and Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospitals in Gaza City were attacked by the Israeli army, and both were damaged."

He explained that the organization, in cooperation with its partners, delivered today basic medical supplies, food and water to the Indonesian hospital, noting that 10 patients in critical condition were transferred to Al-Shifa Hospital, but the occupation forces detained 4 patients during their transfer, calling on the occupation authorities to ensure respect for their health needs and rights.

He also demanded the release of the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, whose whereabouts are unknown.

It is worth noting that about 1,060 cadres in the Gaza Strip have been martyred since the beginning of the aggression, on October 7, 2023, while more than 310 others were arrested, hundreds were injured, and about 130 ambulances were destroyed, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The deliberate targeting of medical infrastructure has deprived civilians of access to basic health care services.

UN organizations warned that the volume of medical supplies entering Gaza is not sufficient to sustain the health response, and that all medical evacuations outside Gaza are still suspended.
