The opposition overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Sunday that President Bashar al-Assad "left the country to an unknown destination."
The Observatory's announcement is consistent with what two senior Syrian army officers told Reuters on Sunday, that Assad had left the country on a plane.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdul Rahman told the Associated Press that Assad boarded a plane from Damascus early Sunday morning.
Abdul Rahman's comments came after armed factions announced their entry into Damascus, after making significant progress across the country.
This was the first time the factions had reached Damascus since 2018, when Syrian forces recaptured areas on the outskirts of the capital after years of siege.
Local media reported that Damascus airport was evacuated and all flights were stopped.
