Germany puts 4 people on trial for alleged Hamas links
The German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that it has requested that four people be referred to court on charges of belonging to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and collecting weapons in Europe for the movement.
The four suspects were arrested in Berlin and the Netherlands, and the State Security Department of the Berlin State Court of Appeal will consider the case and issue a decision on whether to accept it or not, and set a trial date if it is accepted.
"They had all been working for Hamas abroad for years and held important positions in it, in connection with the management of the military branch" of the movement, which the European Union officially classified as a "terrorist" organization in 2003, the prosecutor's office specializing in terrorism, based in the western city of Karlsruhe, wrote.
According to the prosecution statement, “In the spring of 2019, one of the four defendants set up a warehouse for ammunition and weapons in Bulgaria. In the summer of 2019, he emptied a weapons cache in Denmark and brought a pistol from it to Germany. The man traveled to Bulgaria again in August of the same year to search for the warehouse.”
The prosecution continued, "Between June and December 2023, all the accused, in varying formations, searched several times for a weapons cache in Poland from Berlin, but ultimately the location of this cache could not be located."
The German Federal Prosecutor's Office confirmed that "Hamas organized weapons concealment operations in various European countries to carry out possible attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe, including the Israeli embassy in Berlin, the American base in Ramstein (southwest Germany) and the area surrounding the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin."
