America hands Berri a draft of a truce proposal
Lebanese media reported on Thursday that US Ambassador Lisa Johnson handed Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri a written paper containing a proposal for a ceasefire in Lebanon. No further details were immediately available.
Earlier today, the American news website Axios quoted an American official as saying that the United States had reached understandings with the Israelis regarding an agreement to stop the war, and was seeking understandings with the Lebanese side.
In turn, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, confirmed today (Thursday) that the redeployment of the army in southern Lebanon is “absolutely central” to any permanent solution that leads to an end to the war between Hezbollah and Israel.
According to what was reported by the "Agence France-Presse", Lacroix said during a meeting with journalists near the capital Beirut, that "the redeployment of the Lebanese armed forces is an absolutely pivotal factor for any permanent solution", in light of the escalation of fighting between the party and the Hebrew state since September 23.
Lacroix made a three-day visit to Lebanon, meeting with officials including Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a close ally of Hezbollah who is negotiating on its behalf to end the war, and Army Commander Joseph Aoun. He also visited the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The United States is seeking to broker a ceasefire that would end the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, but the efforts have yet to yield results. Israel launched an intensive air and ground campaign in Lebanon in late September after an exchange of cross-border fire parallel to the Gaza war.
