Israel classifies Gaza as a "secondary battlefield" for the first time since October 7

Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the Israeli army has turned the Gaza Strip into a "secondary battlefield" for the first time since October 7, 2023, when Israel began its devastating war on the besieged Strip.

The newspaper added on Friday that most of the occupation army's attention and resources are currently directed to Lebanon.

She said that the army had turned Gaza last week into a secondary battlefield with the start of the ground operation in southern Lebanon, but left the regular forward division of the Southern Command to raid Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip for an expected period that could extend to several weeks.

Israel has expanded its declared goals for its ongoing war on Gaza to include enabling Israeli residents in the north to return to their homes, despite US warnings against expanding the war.

This came after calls in Israel to wage war on Hezbollah in Lebanon increased, with the escalation of its missile attacks on northern settlements, which caused tens of thousands of settlers to flee.

Since September 23, Israel has actually expanded the scope of the war it is waging on Gaza to include most of Lebanon’s regions - including the capital Beirut - through unprecedentedly violent and intense air strikes. It has also begun a ground incursion into the south, disregarding international warnings and UN resolutions.

The current Israeli escalation against Lebanon has resulted in the killing of about 1,300 people, the injury of thousands - including a large number of women and children - and the displacement of more than 1.2 million people, according to official Lebanese data.

Hezbollah responds to the Israeli attack on Lebanon by firing missiles, drones and artillery shells targeting military sites, cities and settlements across Israel.

For more than a year, Israel has continued its war on Gaza, which has led to the martyrdom and injury of more than 139,000 Palestinians - most of them children and women - and the loss of more than 10,000 people, amid widespread destruction and a worsening famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children, in one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
