Jordan condemns Knesset efforts to approve ban on UNRWA
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned, on Sunday evening, the efforts of the Israeli Knesset to ban the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Israel.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Ambassador Sufian Qudah, said that these attempts, which come after the Knesset had previously classified the agency as a terrorist organization, represent a systematic targeting of UNRWA and its vital role in providing humanitarian services to Palestinian refugees, and reflect the Israeli policy of politically assassinating the agency and obstructing its work.
He continued: "These Israeli attempts are illegal and invalid practices, and constitute a flagrant violation of international law and Israel's obligations as an occupying power," stressing that the Israeli attempts to systematically target the agency and its symbolism, which affirms the right of Palestinian refugees to return and compensation in accordance with international law, are doomed to failure.
The judges stressed the need for the international community to take immediate and urgent action to provide protection for the Palestinian people, the United Nations organizations, and relief agencies seeking to mitigate the effects of the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem.
He stressed the importance of the mandate granted to UNRWA under the United Nations mandate, pointing out the need for the international community to continue providing support to the agency and for it to continue to shoulder its indispensable responsibilities in providing vital services to Palestinian refugees.
