Mikati pledges to make every effort to prevent war on Lebanon
Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Wednesday that he had requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the bombing of communications devices in Lebanon, noting that "the Israeli enemy is flouting all international laws."
Mikati explained that he would tour the hospitals, saying, "I assure the Lebanese that the influx of wounded to the hospitals has stopped now," and that the second wave of wireless device bombings has ended and there are no new injuries. He stressed that his government will do everything in its power to prevent war on Lebanon and secure peace.
Mikati thanked all the countries that expressed their solidarity with Lebanon in these circumstances, following the explosion of the pager devices, praising on the other hand what he called the national unity that was evident yesterday after the grave incident that occurred, stressing that “this unity is the strongest response to the Israeli aggression on Lebanon.”
"spiral of violence"
Today, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib said that Israel's "unprecedented attack represents a blatant assault on Lebanon's sovereignty and a violation of international conventions."
He added that the attack could plunge the region into a major cycle of violence and herald the outbreak of a wider conflict, calling on the United Nations to exert pressure on Israel to stop the escalation and put an end to its attacks.
In parallel, the head of Hezbollah's executive council, Hashem Safieddine, said in a speech during the funeral of a number of those killed yesterday, Tuesday, "We are facing a new phase of aggression and punishment is coming," stressing that "the people of the resistance have not and will not weaken at all."
A security source told Al Jazeera yesterday that the explosion of communication devices in Lebanon was caused by a hack using wireless technology, explaining that the explosion included areas in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Bekaa, and southern Lebanon.
Today, Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad said that the death toll from the wireless communication device bombings in Lebanon has risen to 12, including two children, while countries announced sending medical aid.
Al-Abyad explained that within half an hour, between 2,750 and 2,800 wounded people arrived at the hospitals yesterday, and that the number of serious injuries reached about 300, including children and women, not just Hezbollah members.
