Second assassination attempt on Trump's life within two months
Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Sunday evening that he was fine after a shooting near his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, his campaign and the US Secret Service said Sunday. The incident appears to be an assassination attempt on the former president, the second in two months.
The FBI said in a statement on Sunday that it was investigating "what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump."
The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Course, where the former president was playing golf, shortly before 2 p.m., according to officials.
A witness saw the alleged gunman running from the golf course bushes and took a photo of his car, leading to the suspect's quick arrest, the Palm Beach County Sheriff said at a news conference Sunday.
The man in custody is Ryan Wesley Routh, according to three media outlets, citing multiple anonymous law enforcement sources.
Republican candidate Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, "I hate Taylor Swift," the famous American singer who announced her support for the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris. On the same day, his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), admitted that he "does not regret" spreading false stories about Haitian immigrants eating pets such as cats and dogs, which led to threats against Haitian immigrants.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw showed photos from what he said was the assassination attempt depicting a gun, a backpack and a professional camera owned by Roth, who apparently supports Ukraine and fears that Trump will stop supporting Ukraine in his re-election bid.
He described the firearm as an AK-style rifle - a ubiquitous semi-automatic rifle designed with a curved magazine with a capacity of 30 rounds.
Firearms experts were quick on Sunday to point out some features in the photo that suggest the rifle is actually a Soviet-designed AK-47, or Kalashnikov assault rifle, designed in the 1940s by famed Russian designer Sergei Simonov.
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the incident and were "relieved to learn he is safe. They will be updated regularly."
Meanwhile, Harris, Trump's competitor in the November 5 elections, tweeted on Twitter expressing her happiness that the former president is fine and saying that "violence has no place in America."
Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, just months before a presidential election that is likely to be a close contest between him and Harris.
It was the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in more than four decades, and represented a glaring security lapse that forced Kimberly Shettle to resign as Secret Service director under pressure from members of Congress from both parties.
Trump was shot in the right ear in the Pennsylvania incident and one person in the audience was killed. The Secret Service shot and killed the shooter, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Cross.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the Secret Service investigation confirmed security lapses that paved the way for the attempted assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania, and also revealed new information, including that agents did not direct local police to secure the roof of the building used by the gunman, according to senior government officials familiar with the investigation.
