Families of Israeli prisoners demand Netanyahu remove solidarity badge with their relatives

A body representing the families of Israeli prisoners in the Gaza Strip asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to stop wearing the badge in solidarity with their relatives, while he is "obstructing" any deal to return them.

In conferences and media interviews, Netanyahu and a number of his government ministers appear wearing a small yellow pin on their lapels, as a symbol of solidarity with Israeli prisoners in Gaza.

The "Abductees' Families Committee" (Israeli prisoners in Gaza) said in a statement that it "demands that Netanyahu stop wearing the abductees' pin," according to the private Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The Authority added, addressing Netanyahu: “Stop making a false show of support and seeking the return of the kidnapped, while in reality you are doing everything in your power to undermine the deal to return them.”

The statement stressed that "the kidnapped pin is worn by anyone who wants to express unconditional support for the return of the kidnapped and sympathy with their families."

Since last Sunday, anger and protests have escalated in Israel, especially among the families of prisoners, after the army announced the return of 6 bodies from a tunnel in the city of Rafah, south of Gaza, of prisoners. Hebrew media reported that the names of at least 3 of them were included in a deal that was being prepared two months ago, before Netanyahu added new conditions that hindered its implementation.

Netanyahu insists on remaining in the Philadelphi Corridor on the border between Gaza and Egypt in any deal with Hamas, which the movement and Cairo reject.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant had previously confirmed that withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor during the first phase of the deal would not pose a security problem for Israel, but Netanyahu announced on Monday in a press conference that achieving the war's goals "passes through the Philadelphi Corridor," stressing that his country "will never withdraw from it."
