Israeli occupation appoints an Israeli officer to manage the Gaza Strip
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed, quoting an Israeli source, that the army has created a new position called “Head of Humanitarian-Civilian Efforts in the Gaza Strip,” to manage humanitarian aspects and coordinate civilian issues in the Strip, in a move aimed at consolidating the occupation of the Strip for a long period.
The newspaper said that Brigadier General Elad Goren will assume this new position, adding that this position is equivalent to the position of head of the Israeli Civil Administration in the West Bank.
According to the newspaper, Goren will be responsible for following up on the possibility of the return of one million displaced Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip, reconstruction projects, coordination with humanitarian aid organizations, transferring aid to the population, and preparing for the winter.
The newspaper added that Goren's appointment came against the backdrop of the Israeli government's lack of a clear strategic vision for what is known as the day after the war in Gaza, and the army's realization that Israeli responsibility for the daily aspects of life in Gaza will continue, and even increase, in the coming years.
The newspaper quoted a senior security official as saying that the position is intended for a long period, and is not a position to manage a limited project, and used the description of Goren as the chief Gaza officer and said that he will manage the affairs of two million Palestinians, which symbolizes the continuation of the occupation of Gaza for several years according to the Israeli plan.
The newspaper added that this measure was taken with the aim of "giving the army international legitimacy to continue the war on Gaza without affecting humanitarian aspects such as the occurrence of famine or a humanitarian crisis."
She explained that there is no clear definition yet for Goren's position, who grew up leading the coordination of the occupation government's activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, but he is the first to hold a position parallel to the head of the civil administration in the occupied West Bank, Brigadier General Hisham Ibrahim.
For its part, the Israeli newspaper Maariv pointed out that one of the reasons for creating this position is that it will be a step it described as “fateful” in the victory over the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), and paving the way for the deal, adding that a step of this kind “constitutes a fundamental shift in the army’s vision of the humanitarian file in the Gaza Strip,” according to its expression.
According to the same newspaper, the army decided to take this step with the approval of the political level, to facilitate the entry of aid "in a manner that serves Israel's interests."
She said that Goren will be affiliated with the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, whose work was added to the sector after the war, as it was limited to the West Bank.
