Iran denies treason theory in Haniyeh assassination, vows to respond without "falling into trap"

Iran has renewed its threat to respond to the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, stressing that it will take revenge at the appropriate time, without "falling into a trap." At the same time, it denied the involvement of elements from within in the assassination.

"The Zionist entity's aggression against our security and sovereignty will not go unanswered," Iran's new Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in remarks he made on Saturday.

He stressed that revenge will be taken "at the right time and in the right way, and there will be no hesitation in this matter."

Araghchi did not go into details, but stressed that the Iranian response "will be precise and thoughtful, and we will take all issues into consideration," adding, "We will not fall into the trap that may have been set for us."

He pointed out that the new Iranian government will strive to ease the "pressures" exerted by the United States on Tehran.

"What we have to do is manage the tensions and hostilities" between Tehran and Washington, he said.

Investigation results

Meanwhile, Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib said in an interview with a local website that reports indicate that internal elements were not involved in the assassination of the head of Hamas's political bureau, ruling out the possibility of a security breach.

Hamas announced on Wednesday morning, July 31, that Haniyeh had been martyred following an assassination attempt targeting him at his residence in Tehran after his participation in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said that initial investigations showed that the assassination was carried out with a short-range projectile with a warhead weighing 7.5 kilograms, fired from outside Haniyeh's residence, which is a residence for foreign guests and is subject to all security protocols.

The Revolutionary Guards confirmed that Israel was behind the execution and planning of the operation despite its silence, noting that it sought through the assassination in Tehran "to create strife in the Islamic world and the resistance front."
