US official: There is a chance to reach a ceasefire agreement by the end of next week
- A senior official in the administration of US President Joe Biden said on Friday that the United States had spent two productive days of negotiations with Qatar, Egypt and Israel, while representatives of the Hamas movement were present.
- “We have had calls between President Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim, and I can tell you that we are at the end of the day now,” the official said in a call, requesting anonymity because of the delicate nature of the negotiations.
- The official confirmed that negotiations will continue next week in Doha and Cairo, "and that we look forward to reaching an agreement before the end of next week," stressing that the United States built on good faith in the negotiations.
- The official stressed that we believe that the recent negotiations are the best ever; the Israelis are serious.
- He pointed out that the agreement is what Israel presented on May 27, President Biden presented to the world on May 31, and was adopted by the Security Council on June 10, with minor amendments.
- The official said: "Hamas returned to us on July 3 with many points, some of which were acceptable and some of which were not, focusing on releasing the hostages and releasing them alive, details for bringing in support and aid, and removing the rubble."
- Regarding the timing of the ceasefire agreement's effectiveness, he said that if a full agreement is reached, it will take place immediately.
