Qatari-American-Egyptian statement: Talks will continue next week

Qatar, the United States and Egypt issued a joint statement on Friday evening, following two days of negotiations in Doha, in order to reach an agreement to stop the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

“Over the past 48 hours in Doha, senior officials from our governments have been engaged in intensive talks as mediators with the aim of concluding an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages and detainees. These talks were serious, constructive and conducted in a positive atmosphere,” the statement said.

"Earlier today in Doha, the United States, with the support of the State of Qatar and the Arab Republic of Egypt, presented to both parties a proposal that narrows the gaps between the parties and is consistent with the principles set out by President Biden on May 31, 2024, and Security Council Resolution 2735," he said.

The joint statement indicated that "this proposal builds on the points of agreement achieved during the past week, and fills the remaining gaps in a manner that allows for the rapid implementation of the agreement."

He explained that "the technical teams will continue to work during the coming days on the implementation details, including arrangements for implementing the comprehensive humanitarian aspects of the agreement, in addition to the aspects related to hostages and detainees."

According to the joint statement, “Senior officials from our governments will meet in Cairo before the end of next week, hoping to reach an agreement on the terms set out today. As the leaders of the three countries stated last week, there is no more time to waste and no excuses can be accepted by any party for further delay. It is time to release the hostages and detainees, begin a ceasefire and implement this agreement.”

The statement concluded, "Now the way is paved to achieve this result, save lives, provide relief to the people of Gaza, and calm regional tensions."

A Hamas official said, "What we were informed about the results of the Doha meetings does not include commitment to what was agreed upon on July 2."

In this context, Channel 13 Israel quoted an Israeli official as saying, "The gaps have narrowed and progress is expected to be made next week by specialists."

He added, "The Americans proposed a formula related to the agreed-upon terms, without any reference to 'Netzarim' and 'Philadelphia', in which there are still gaps."
