Hungary's Budapest holds sit-in in Freedom Square for the first time in support of Gaza and Palestine
Another opportunity presented itself to independent activists on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, when they received permission from the authorities to protest on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in front of the US Embassy in Freedom Square. They joined local Palestinian solidarity groups to advocate for Palestinian and indigenous human rights and against oppression, occupation, colonialism, Western domination and resource exploitation – through the Palestinian cause.
The demonstration was held in front of the US embassy in Freedom Square where hundreds gathered with Palestinian flags flying everywhere, as well as Algerian, Lebanese, Sudanese and South African flags. There was official support from diplomats and embassies. The Angolan and Palestinian embassies attended with officials while the Brazilian and South African embassies publicly supported and announced the event. In addition, there was coverage from many media outlets as everyone waited for the “first” public Palestinian demonstration.
Budapest has been quiet when it comes to demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine. This is due to Viktor Orbán’s decision after October 7 to ban any demonstrations or public support for Palestine in Hungary. This is also reflected in the mainstream and independent media coverage of the tragedies taking place in Gaza, which always adapts to the Israeli narrative. Thus, misleading public opinion. Most of the solidarity events with Palestine have been organized by grassroots activists and through different platforms.
