Jill Stein speaks to Palestinian-Americans running for Vice President
Green Party candidate Jill Stein is seeking to capitalize on Arab and Muslim voters' discontent with Democrats over the Biden administration's unconditional support for Israel in its brutal and destructive war on Gaza, by bringing a Palestinian-American running mate into her campaign.
NBC News reported that Stein interviewed three potential candidates about running alongside her as vice president.
The three potential candidates are: Noura Erakat, a prominent human rights lawyer and professor at Rutgers Law School with a large social media following, who has acknowledged discussing the position with Stein and said she was disappointed with the way Vice President Kamala Harris shut down pro-Palestinian protesters in Detroit on Wednesday.
Erekat criticized candidate Kamala Harris on Wednesday for calling on pro-Palestinian activists and opponents of Israel's war of genocide in Gaza to be silent.
Some disaffected voters in her community have already lost to Democrats and plan to vote Green or another third party, while another group “wants to support the Democratic ticket and just needs the bare minimum” of recognition, Erakat said.
The second candidate, Abdul Ayoub, is a prominent human rights attorney and president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).
“It is a great honor to be considered for the Vice Presidential nomination alongside Dr. Jill Stein,” Ayoub tweeted on the X platform. “This has been a humbling experience, and there are many things to consider moving forward.”
“Since the beginning of the genocide, I have committed to upholding our shared principles, even if it means being disinvited to meetings, losing access, and being sidelined by the establishment. Dr. Stein has consistently maintained the right position on Gaza, Palestine, and human rights throughout this campaign. My consideration for candidacy is a testament to the fact that there are still people, politicians, and candidates who value integrity and a willingness to stand for justice.”
“I appreciate all the support that has been given throughout this process, and I will be considering the next steps with my family and close friends,” he said. “I do not take this decision and responsibility lightly, and I understand the impact it may have.”
A spokesman for a third potential candidate, Dearborn, Michigan, Democratic Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, confirmed that Stein asked him if he would be willing to consider him for the job — before realizing that Hammoud was too young to be constitutionally eligible.
Stein plans to announce her running mate next Friday, Aug. 16, 2024. It’s unclear who she has chosen or whether she has made a decision yet. Stein’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Arab and Muslim voters have traditionally voted Democratic, but President Joe Biden's unwavering support for Israel has alienated many Arab and Muslim voters, who make up large parts of several swing states, especially Michigan.
It is noteworthy that Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian-American who represents Detroit, is one of the few Democrats in Congress who did not endorse Harris.
As noted ahead of last week's Detroit rally in which Harris called on Palestinian activists to be quiet, Harris spoke with members of the so-called "uncommitted" movement led by Palestinian Americans, which grew out of Democratic primary voters who withheld their support as a means of protesting the war in Gaza.
