The United Nations described the scenes of Israeli soldiers raping a Palestinian detainee in the Sde Teiman detention center as "shocking", calling on Israel to investigate all violations.

This came in a statement made on Thursday by the spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Jeremy Laurence.

"These are shocking scenes, one of many of serious Israeli abuses in recent months, including ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees, torture, sexual violence and rape," Lawrence said.

He recalled that recent reports in this regard had spoken of several serious violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including sexual and gender-based violence against persons deprived of their liberty.

The UN official added that some of these crimes may constitute "war crimes."

He stressed that "Israel must ensure prompt, independent and effective investigations into all allegations of violations, which we believe are widespread."

He noted that they regularly express their concern about the “state of impunity” in Israel, a long-standing problem in the context of violations against Palestinians in the occupied territories.

“I renew our call on Israel to ensure immediate access for independent monitoring bodies, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to all detention centres,” he said.

According to Channel 12, on Wednesday, Hebrew media circulated a leaked video documenting the incident of Israeli soldiers sexually assaulting a Palestinian prisoner from Gaza in Sde Teiman.

On July 29, a huge uproar was raised in Israel after members of the military prosecution arrived at this detention center to investigate 9 soldiers who had sexually assaulted a Palestinian prisoner. Five of them were later released.

The Israeli military prosecution is still investigating the suspected soldiers, but has not filed an indictment against any of them.
