In condemnation of Haniyeh's assassination... Anti-Israel demonstrations in Istanbul, Tunis and Rabat

In condemnation of the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in an airstrike attributed to Israel, demonstrations were held on Wednesday in Istanbul, Tunis and Rabat.

In Istanbul, a large crowd gathered in front of the Fatih Mosque, waving Turkish and Palestinian flags and chanting anti-Israel slogans, AFP correspondents reported.

The demonstrators, who walked for about two kilometers, chanted slogans denouncing "murderous Israel" and supporting Palestine.

Protesters burned the Israeli flag, according to an AFP photographer.

The demonstrators held up banners, one of which read in English and another in Turkish: "Israel, the United States and NATO will be defeated!"

Mohammed, 44, is one of them. “I am here because Israel assassinated the representative of the Palestinian people,” he says. “The superpowers have an important role to play. If they do not prevent these massacres (…) history will accuse us of standing by and watching.”

Funeral prayers were held in absentia for Haniyeh in several mosques across Turkey, according to local media.

In Rabat, more than a thousand people demonstrated on Wednesday evening in solidarity with the Palestinian people and in condemnation of Haniyeh's killing.

In front of the parliament in the center of the Moroccan capital, about a thousand people waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans praising the "martyr Ismail Haniyeh" and denouncing the "crime" of his assassination.

In Tunisia, between 400 and 500 people demonstrated, waving Palestinian flags, Lebanese Hezbollah flags, and pictures of Haniyeh.

In the center of the Tunisian capital, a banner was raised that read, “The people want to criminalize normalization,” in reference to the relations between Israel and several Arab countries, such as Morocco.

Tunisia, which hosted the Palestine Liberation Organization under its leadership from 1982 to 1994, strongly supports the Palestinian cause.
