An Israeli delegation leaves Thursday for Cairo to continue Gaza truce talks
An Israeli delegation headed by the head of the Shin Bet Security Agency, Ronen Bar, will leave on Thursday evening for the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to continue discussions aimed at reaching a prisoner exchange agreement and a ceasefire in Gaza.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement: “The negotiating delegation returned from Doha after participating in a four-way summit with the mediators, during which the terms of the deal for the return of the abductees and ways to implement the plan were discussed while ensuring all the goals of the war.”
The statement included that Netanyahu held meetings with the negotiating team this morning, before the delegation, headed by the head of the Shin Bet, and representatives of the Israeli army, headed to Cairo this evening to continue the talks.
The Israeli Prime Minister's statement did not reveal any details about the outcome of the discussions in Doha yesterday, or what was included in the meeting held this morning with Netanyahu.
Also, none of the parties involved in the discussions (the United States, Egypt, and Qatar) officially revealed any details regarding the Doha meeting until 13:50 (UTG) on Thursday afternoon.
Earlier Thursday, Hamas said in a statement that it had not been informed of anything new from the mediators regarding the negotiations aimed at a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the exchange of prisoners with Israel.
On Wednesday, Hebrew media reported that a four-way meeting was held in Doha, with the participation of the head of the Israeli Mossad, David Barnea, the head of the CIA, William Burns, the head of Egyptian intelligence, Abbas Kamel, and the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani.
The broadcasting authority indicated on Wednesday evening that “the points of disagreement (regarding the agreement) are the mechanism for ending the war, the number of Palestinian prisoners who will be released, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.”
However, on Thursday, Maariv newspaper quoted sources familiar with the details of the negotiations with the mediators in Doha, which it did not name, saying that “there is progress in the talks for an agreement between Israel and Hamas.”
On Tuesday, Barr concluded tripartite Israeli-American and Egyptian discussions in Cairo regarding a prisoner exchange deal and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, before the quartet meeting was held in Doha on Wednesday.
The Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation claimed that Bar discussed during the meeting the establishment of an advanced wall under and above the ground on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, while no comment was issued from Cairo in this regard until Thursday.
Over the course of months, and in the face of Israeli intransigence with American cover, mediation efforts did not succeed in reaching an agreement, and were hampered by the refusal of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to respond to the demands of the Hamas movement to stop the war completely.
