Jordanian-American discussions regarding truce negotiations in Gaza
On Thursday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi discussed, with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf, prisoner exchange negotiations between Israel and Hamas, and a ceasefire in Gaza.
This came during their meeting in the capital, Amman, according to a Jordanian Foreign Ministry statement that did not specify the date of the American official’s arrival in the Kingdom, or the duration of the visit.
The statement said that the two sides discussed "ending the Israeli aggression on Gaza, completing the exchange deal with Egyptian, Qatari and American efforts, and delivering sufficient and sustainable humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip."
The two sides discussed "a number of bilateral issues in the context of efforts to enhance cooperation between the two countries," according to the same statement.
On Tuesday, Lev began a tour in the region during which it discussed ways to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an exchange of prisoners between Israel and the Palestinian factions in the Strip.
The tour, which continues until the 18th of this month, includes the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, in addition to Italy, according to a previous statement by the US State Department.
The American official's tour coincides with the start of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Qatar and Egypt, to reach an agreement to exchange prisoners between the two sides, and a ceasefire in Gaza.
Earlier Thursday, the Israeli negotiating delegation returned from the Qatari capital, Doha, after participating on Wednesday in a four-way meeting that discussed reaching an agreement to exchange prisoners and ceasefire, according to the official Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation.
On Wednesday, Hebrew media reported that a four-way meeting was held in Doha, with the participation of Mossad chief David Barnea, CIA chief William Burns, Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel, and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani.
The Hebrew Channel 12 reported that "consultations are expected to be held in Israel today (Thursday) regarding continuing negotiations."
The Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation (official) indicated on Wednesday evening that “the points of disagreement (regarding the agreement) are the mechanism for ending the war, the number of Palestinian prisoners who will be released, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.”
However, on Thursday, the Maariv newspaper quoted sources familiar with the details of the negotiations with the mediators in Doha, which it did not name, saying that “there is progress in the talks for an agreement between Israel and Hamas.”
Over the course of months, and in the face of Israeli intransigence with American cover, mediation efforts did not succeed in reaching an agreement, and were hampered by the refusal of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to respond to the demands of the Hamas movement to stop the war completely.
