The exchange deal... Israeli demands for Hamas and an American official visits Doha

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported - citing informed sources - that Mossad head David Barnea informed the mediators of the need for the Hamas movement to agree to the broad outlines of the exchange deal without change, while reports reported that the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns and an Israeli delegation will arrive in Doha in the coming days.

These sources told the newspaper that Barnea’s talks in Doha were “positive with the need to reduce gaps to achieve progress,” while the Israeli Walla website, quoting officials, said that Burns will join the exchange deal talks in Doha in the coming days.

For its part, Axios reported from Israeli sources that the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency will meet this week in Doha with the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and that an Israeli delegation including experts will also go to Doha to discuss operational issues.

"Golden opportunity"

In turn, the Israeli Channel 13 said that the security establishment sees a “golden opportunity” to reach an agreement, and recommends that the political leadership exploit it, noting that the army informed the political leadership that the fight against Hamas will continue for years, “which means the loss of hostages.”

The New York Times also said that Israeli army leaders believe that the exchange deal with the Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza is “the right path,” even if Hamas remains in power.

For his part, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said, "A deal must be concluded now, and whoever abandoned the hostages 9 months ago must return them."

Israeli media reported that the Doha negotiations would take a long time, and that Hamas’ response gave the mediators hope, but there are many issues that need to be resolved.

This came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed - yesterday, Friday - to send the negotiating delegation to resume negotiations in Doha, with Israel announcing that it had received - through mediators - a response from Hamas to the proposal of a prisoner exchange agreement.

Neither Israel, Hamas, nor the mediators published the new response that the movement submitted to the mediators and was conveyed to Israel last Wednesday, while Reuters on Thursday quoted an American official as saying that an American delegation would participate in the meetings in Doha, adding that Hamas had adopted a very major modification in its position on the agreement. , according to him.

This comes in light of reports that the United States, Egypt and Qatar are pushing towards a settlement with the Hamas movement, amid Israeli controversy and accusations that Netanyahu is taking efforts to prevent this settlement, for interests related to his political survival.

According to Haaretz newspaper, Netanyahu began working to abort the deal before Hamas responded to the American proposals, after he felt that the movement could show flexibility in this direction, as he “sees that there is a clear and present danger to the survival of his government, and this is Netanyahu’s first priority.” .

This coincides with the escalation of protests in Israel demanding the release of detainees in Gaza, before the demands of those demonstrations - some of whose demands are aligned with the Israeli opposition - expanded to calls for the overthrow of Netanyahu’s government, the dissolution of the Knesset, and going to early elections.

This comes as the Israeli occupation forces continue, since October 7, their war on Gaza, leaving more than 125,000 Palestinian martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and famine in the besieged Strip. The lives of dozens of children.
