Israeli government pushes a law that prevents the imposition of administrative detention on terrorist settlers
The Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a draft law proposed by the Chairman of the Law and Constitution in the Knesset, Simcha Rotman, which aims to impose administrative detention on Palestinians only, and prevents its imposition on settlers suspected of committing terrorist crimes against Palestinians.
Although Israel rarely pursues terrorist settlers, extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said, “It is not acceptable for me to administratively arrest young people because of a drawing or writing on a wall,” and announced that the draft law aims to “prevent administrative detention of Israeli citizens.”
However, Haaretz newspaper reported on Monday that, according to prison administration data, ten Jews were administratively detained from the beginning of the aggression on Gaza until the beginning of last May, while 2,733 Palestinians were in administrative detention during the same period.
The draft law proposed by Rotman stipulates the imposition of administrative detention on members of “terrorist organizations” only, while Israel does not describe terrorist settler organizations as terrorist, and considers them only citizens, while Palestinians in the West Bank are arbitrarily imposed administrative detention on them.
