WHO: More than 10,000 citizens need medical evacuation from Gaza
Today, Friday, the World Health Organization welcomed the first medical evacuation of 21 children with cancer from the Gaza Strip since the closure of the Rafah crossing on May 7, saying that “there are more than 10,000 Palestinians who need to be evacuated to receive treatment.”
During a press conference in the Swiss city of Geneva, UN spokesman Tariq Jasarevic said, “There are more than 10,000 people in need of evacuation and receiving medical care outside Gaza.”
He explained that "6 thousand of them suffer from trauma, and more than two thousand suffer from chronic diseases."
Jasarevic said: “Since the closure of the Rafah crossing, no medical evacuation operation took place until yesterday, Thursday, when 21 children with cancer were evacuated.”
He added: "We need to reopen the Rafah crossing and any other border crossing to remove patients so that their lives remain safe."
The Israeli occupation forces occupied the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, before burning and destroying it, following their ground invasion of the Rafah Governorate, south of the Gaza Strip, last May.
