International criticism of Israeli use of dogs against Palestinian detainees
On Thursday, Jeremy Lawrence, spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, criticized the use of dogs by the Israeli occupation forces to attack Palestinian detainees.
“Such actions constitute serious violations of Israel’s obligations with respect to persons protected under the law of occupation,” Lawrence said.
He explained that inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is “strictly prohibited under international human rights law, with regard to the rights of the individual to life and health,” and Israel has also violated this order.
In response to a question about Israeli soldiers tying an injured Palestinian in front of a military vehicle and using him as a human shield in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, Lawrence indicated that the regional office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights responded to this incident in a statement.
The statement read: “The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemns the continuing and flagrant violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law binding on Israel as the occupying power in the occupied West Bank.”
The statement noted that using a Palestinian as a human shield on a military vehicle is "another example of illegal actions carried out by the Israeli army."
On June 22, the Israeli occupation forces injured 3 young men during a raid on a house in the Jabriyat area in the city of Jenin. They tied one of these young men to the front of a military vehicle and used him as a human shield.
