PALESTINE

Israel's prisons are overcrowded with Palestinian prisoners and there is an emergency cancellation of arrests in the West Bank

The Israeli army and the Shin Bet security service “had to cancel about 20 planned arrests this week, due to a lack of space in prisons,” the official Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said on Sunday.

The authority explained that “in light of the increasing distress in places of detention, the security services are forced to conduct assessments of the situation regarding the danger of the prisoners, and the security services are forced to release administrative detainees who have not been charged at the end of their detention period, to make room for detainees classified as a higher threat.” "They must be subjected to investigation."

It quoted Israeli security officials warning that the lack of space in detention centers and prisons would lead to the cancellation of more arrests and countermeasures in the occupied West Bank.

The Prison Service and the Ministry of National Security in Israel announced in early April that the detention capacity for Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons is 14,500 detainees, while the actual number of detainees exceeds 21,000.

The Prison Service warned at the time that, due to the continuous increase of dozens of detainees daily, it “would not be able to accommodate additional security prisoners.”

Last week, the Israeli newspaper “Maariv” said that Tel Aviv had arrested about 4,150 Palestinians from across the West Bank since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, but the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club announced yesterday, Saturday, that the number of detainees from the West Bank since the beginning of The war reached 9325.

There is no specific tally of Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip, who are held by the Israeli occupation army in notorious centers, including the “Sde Teman” camp in the Negev Desert.
