Washington imposes sanctions on the Palestinian “lions’ den”
Today, Thursday, the US State Department imposed sanctions on the Palestinian “Lions’ Den” armed group located in the occupied West Bank.
The group - which is based in the city of Nablus - is accused of being responsible for a number of attacks on Israeli settlements and on Israeli security forces, between September 2022 and last April.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement: “The United States condemns all acts of violence committed in the West Bank, whoever committed them.”
He added that the United States "will use the tools at our disposal to expose and hold accountable those who threaten peace and stability there."
The targeting of the Palestinian group with sanctions comes after sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Israeli settlers in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
The United Nations said earlier this week that at least 505 Palestinians have been martyred in the West Bank at the hands of the Israeli army, other security forces and settlers since the outbreak of war in Gaza more than 8 months ago.
Also, about 24 Israelis, including 8 soldiers, were killed in clashes in the West Bank or in supposed attacks carried out by Palestinians during the same period, according to the United Nations.
The Lions' Den group appeared in 2022 in the Old City of Nablus, and consisted of militants affiliated with several Palestinian factions. It also included former members of the Palestinian security services, but they refused to associate themselves with a specific faction.
